With the majority of subsea completions requiring the handling and deployment of control lines and or large diameter umbilical’s a method was required to facilitate safe handling of these. To this end the manipulator arm was developed to suit most FMS spiders was designed and manufactured by 2M-Tek, Tubular Systems. The manipulator arm simply attaches with an adapter plate onto the FMS base plate setting ring. A single hose bundle with two lines inside, links the arm to the FMS control console located on the drill-floor. Once in place manipulator arm has the ability to acts as a guide for the umbilical guiding it into the safe arc or cut-outs on the FMS and to raise the umbilical against the tubular when it comes time to fit the clamps to secure the cable. The elimination of the man handling aspect greatly enhances the safety of personnel on the rig floor and makes the task of attaching the clamps very simple. The benefit of saving on the time taken to attach every clamp is immense however by far the greatest benefit is the huge improvement in safety, protecting not only the investment in the umbilical but also in the technicians on the rig-floor. |
